Undergraduate open seminar:
SEX, VIOLENCE, AND EMPIRE IN RUSSIAN ROMANTICISM
Credit: 3 hours.
The Chechen Wars of the 1990s and today are the culmination of nearly 200 years of Russian imperialist incursions into the Caucasus. The aim of this course is to examine one of the earliest observers of and participants in this geopolitical history: Mikhail Lermontov. We will examine Lermontov’s approach to the Caucasus through the ideological and thematic models of Orientalism, Romanticism, landscape, violence, and gender. Finally, we will examine the legacy of Lermontov’s work in modern journalism, literature, and film about the Chechen wars. All readings are in English. Same as CLW 151.
This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for a Literature and the Arts course.
